Tour overview

Tour overview

Ever wondered what does the bird paradise look like? The Bird Watch tour will give you precisely that - the sense of freedom and wilderness. The shallow waters of the Curonian Lagoon share the confluence of the Nemunas and the Minija Rivers, where bulrush kingdom provides a shelter for millions of birds that migrate through these territories every season.

We will take you to the “hard to reach” spots that are only accessible by canoe. Thus, paddlers will admire the beauty and grace of the resting birds and undoubtedly the most spectacular panorama of the Nemunas River delta.

What we'll do

What we'll do

The adventure begins in the small fisherman's town Kintai, located just a few kilometers from where we start. We will start with a briefing, introduction to canoe paddling and will practice some basic canoe strokes in the local marina. We will paddle to our first stop for approximately forty minutes and we are ready to enter the shallow waters of the Curonian Lagoon. The local feathered inhabitants will probably be aware of our arrival long before we will see them, so get ready to bog down into the reeds and water lilies. Click to expand…
There is not that much camouflage options for the “sitting duck's” like us. Depending on the season, we may see red-necked grebe, bittern, white-tailed eagle, marsh harrier, cormorants, numerous duck and terns types, swans, many more and of course kingfisher! There are 294 different species of birds here in total, and if we are lucky enough, we might see the most gracious of them. After changing a couple of spots, your guide will take some stunning pictures of you paddling. You will also get some pictures taken from a drone!*

If only weather conditions will allow, during one of our stops, we will set up a bird spotting scope with a powerful x40 zoom. Boris (your guide) will not only show but also will tell a ton of facts and interesting insight about surrounding birds. On our way back we will make one last stop on an island to take a break, relax and have that precious cup of morning coffee or tea.

What to wear while canoeing is important.

When the air and water are warm, simply dress for a day at the beach. Keeping in mind to wear things that protect you from the sun and keep you cool.

When the air is cool, you have to assess the conditions and your capabilities more carefully.

The key concept to bear in mind is layering. Several thin garments will keep you just as warm as a single thicker one, and are much more versatile. Remember you’ll need to think about staying cool as much as staying warm, and you can always add or subtract layers. The base-layer provides insulation and picks up perspiration and either absorbs it (like cotton or wool) or wicks it outward (like synthetic fibers). You want moisture to be wicked away. The insulating layer can be wool, fleece, or a similar material. Look for garments that are cut to allow complete freedom of movement. The outer layer protects you, the base-layer, and the insulating layer from the elements. Make sure it is both windproof and waterproof.

Footwear can range from old sneakers to hiking boots, to rubber boots.
